Andhra Pradesh is known as “the bejewelled rice bowl of India” and is considered as one of the most progressive states in the country with respect to agriculture development and maintaining high levels of crop production compared to several other states. The state is endowed with a variety of soils ranging from poor coastal sands to highly fertile deltaic alluviums. Andhra Pradesh is called ‘A River State’ as it is blessed with major river systems The State ranks 1st in production of Spices and Fruits, 1st in production of Citrus, Papaya, Oil Palm and Tomato, 2nd in the production of Mango, Cashew, 3rd in production of flowers and loose flowers and 4th in the production of Banana. It also ranks second in India in terms of mineral wealth. The state has about one third of India’s limestone reserves. The Krishna Godavari Basin has huge reserves of natural gas and petroleum. The state has a large amount of coal reserves. The state ranks first nationwide in hydro electricity generation, with a national market share of over 11%. Andhra Pradesh has the fourth largest power generating utility in the country. The two cheapest sources of thermal power generation, coal and natural gas, are in abundance.
